Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust
Maungatautari in the Waikato is ringed by a 47km predator proof fence which was erected in order to establish a pest-free mainland island. Thanks to the work of the Trust, its sponsors and volunteers, it is now home to many threatened species including kaka, hihi, takahe, giant weta, popokatea, kiwi, all of which are now thriving in the regenerated lush forest and pest free environment.
It is the aspiration of MEIT and Kākāpō Recovery that kākāpō will once again be found on Maungatautari. The recent visit of Sirocco the kakapo, world-famous ‘spokesbird’ for conservation, was the first step in this direction. MEIT is now raising money for a clip-on fence attachment to keep kakapo in.
