Frequently Asked Questions
Waitomo adventure caving, abseiling, blackwater rafting and tubing is an adventure activity that is not without risk. We have provided the following important information for you, please ensure you read this carefully prior to your trip.
What is your policy on Fitness, Health & Safety?
Participants need a moderate level of fitness – if you can bush-walk or ski for a day, you will be fine. They should not be heavily overweight or suffer from serious health problems such as heart conditions or significant back complaints.
All medical issues must be declared to both our booking staff and activity guides prior to the commencement of your adventure. In most cases, minor medical issues will not preclude participation.
Rescue underground is a slow and difficult process. The risk of complications such as hypothermia could make a rescue scenario more dangerous than the same injury sustained above ground.
Can I wear my eye glasses?
Waitomo Adventures recommends our clients DO NOT wear eye-glasses during our action activities – unless your impaired vision will compromise your safety (glasses may be scratched, broken or become lost). It is however possible to wear them, provided appropriate care is taken. If you do choose to wear your glasses, you must ensure they are secured to you at all times. You will be asked to accept full responsibility for them. We strongly recommend that customers carry their own insurance for losses of this kind.
Waitomo Adventures Ltd will not be held reliable for any damage to eye glasses.
Can children take part?
Yes, children are welcome.
Please note that all children under 15 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or mature adult known to the child who is aged 18 years and over. Please see trip details to check minimum ages for each type of trip.
Are there minimum numbers for the activities to take place?
All trips must have at least 2 customers to depart.

We will supply all of your equipment; including helmets, lights, special vertical gear, and overalls/wetsuits (as appropriate) and PVC boots.
